Scientific and technical cooperation between Germany and Chile continues to gain momentum. To mark the official opening of the Saxon Science Liaison Office (SSLO) in Chile, a high-level delegation from the Free State of Saxony traveled to Santiago, led by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism, professor Heike Graßmann. Together with the Heidelberg Center for Latin America of Heidelberg University (HCLA), active in Chile since 2002, the SSLO now becomes the second representation of German universities in the country. On Tuesday, August 19, the delegation and representatives of Saxon universities concluded their visit with a stop at the HCLA, joined by Germany’s Ambassador to Chile, Susanne Fries-Gaier, and Carola Bruhn, the Embassy’s new Head of Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation. During a working lunch, discussions focused on the SSLO’s priorities, the HCLA’s experience in developing binational programs and structures, and the opportunities arising from a stronger presence of German universities in Chile. Such presence helps to highlight the research potential with Latin America, identify new avenues for joint projects, and position Germany and the EU as attractive spaces for research, higher education and knowledge transfer.
